We are very lucky working from Helford in that not only is it a very sheltered port to work from, meaning we get flat calm conditions however strong the wind as long as its from the SouthWest through to Northerly, but also we are very close to excellent fishing.
Shorter trips suit those who are a bit young, a bit old or a bit unsure about a full day’s fishing. You can expect the sea conditions to be good (normally little more than flat calm) and the empahasis is on catching somehting, not on gambling and maybe going home without having caught at all. Our most reliable fish during the summer are Mackerel and Whiting and both are excellent fun to catch and to eat. However, most of the time we can catch more exotic species and if recent catches of Cod, Haddock, Gurnards and other inshore species have been good, we will probably aim high.
2.5 HOURS
In 2011 we were able to catch, on short 2.5 hour trips, the sorts of fish that people can normally only catch on a half or a full day trip. We have been catching Cod up to 7lb, Haddock, Gurnards, Whiting, Mackerel, Scad, Pouting, Garfish, Herrings and Pilchards, on just 2.5 hour fishing trips! This is not always the case but it’s something to hope for and at any rate, we rarely go home without everyone having caught more than they need for supper and often a lot more than expected. Assuming we have enough Mackerel for eating, we use some for bait for the more exotic fish. If it’s a private charter, I will give you the options based on what seems to be around, if you are fitting in with other people then we will go with a majority decision on how much of a gamble people want to take.
